We help provide Aboriginal children with a positive sense of self, a desire for learning, and opportunities to develop as successful young people.

AHS prepares Aboriginal children for their school years by supporting their spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical growth.

Parents, guardians and extended family are supported as the child's first and most influential teachers, and the wisdom of elders is valued.

Our projects are locally designed, locally controlled, and administered by non-profit Aboriginal organizations.

Aboriginal Head Start directly involves parents and the community in the management and operation of projects.

Oshki Majahitowiin is a preschool program for Aboriginal children between the ages of 3 to 5 years who live in the area between Dufferin Avenue to Mountain Avenue and Main Street to McPhillips Street.

Our program consists of 6 components: education, language and culture, nutrition, health, parental involvement, and social supports. We prepare our children for school, so they will have a greater chance of succeeding. Parent involvement is also part of the program. Parents attend workshops, go on outings with their children, do crafts and help in the classroom.

Our classes for the children are Monday to Thursday. Ojibwe class is from 9:00 to 11:30 and our Cree class is from 1:00 to 3:30. If you are interested in enrolling your child, or if you need more information you can call the Head Start Program at 204-589-1721.
